On July 27, 2025, the Filipino Catholic Communities of Gouda and Its Surroundings (FCCG) and Dordrecht (FCCD) came together for a touching farewell party in honor of Father Marcel, who is embarking on a sabbatical leave to further his studies in the United Kingdom. The celebration followed his final mass in Gouda, where the church was filled with heartfelt gratitude and bittersweet emotions.

The farewell program opened with a moving tribute titled “Why We Will Miss Father Marcel?”—a special presentation based on the letters of his name, M-A-R-C-E-L. Each letter represented a reason why he is so deeply cherished by the community:

  • M – for his Magical heart and openness to everyone shared by Irene
  • A – for his Approachable nature and warm presence shared by Maris
  • R – for his Resilience in guiding the flock during challenging times shared by MaryJane
  • C – for his Care and Compassion that touched many lives shared by Herman
  • E – for the Encouragement he constantly gave shared by Christie
  • L – for the Love he shared unconditionally shared by Amor

The emotional tone of the program was lifted with inspiring musical performances. Sheryl delivered a heartfelt rendition of “Amazing Grace”, followed by Lea’s powerful version of “Goodness of God”, each song serving as a testament to Father Marcel’s impact on their faith journeys.

Messages from community members were read aloud, offering personal stories, expressions of gratitude, and good wishes. The sincere words shared by the community members painted a clear picture of Father Marcel’s lasting influence on their lives.

Adding a joyful and family-friendly touch, Blessie and her daughter performed “Way Maker”, symbolizing faith and hope as Father Marcel begins his new chapter. A light-hearted game involving Father Marcel followed, evoking laughter and showcasing the camaraderie he helped foster within the communities.

The FCCG Choir gave a moving performance of a Pastor Appreciation Song, echoing the collective love and respect felt for their spiritual leader. A thoughtful gift was then presented—a beautifully curated photo album capturing years of memories, events, and the deep connection he nurtured with the communities.

The celebration concluded with Father Marcel’s own farewell message. With heartfelt emotion, he thanked both FCC Gouda and FCC Dordrecht for being more than just communities—they had become his extended family. He expressed deep appreciation for their support, kindness, and shared faith. In parting, he encouraged the community to “continue the love and care for one another”, reminding them that their strength lies in unity and compassion.

Though the party marked a pause in Father Marcel’s local ministry, it also celebrated a legacy of love, service, and spiritual guidance that will continue to inspire. The FCC Gouda and FCC Dordrecht communities send him off with prayers, pride, and the promise that he will always have a home in their hearts.

FCC-Gouda celebrates Flores de Mayo & Fr. Marcel’s birthday

By Kristine Baul

On May 25, 2025, the Filipino Catholic Community in Gouda and its Surrounding (FCCG) came together to celebrate a double joyous occasion: the traditional Flores de Mayo and birthday of Fr. Marcel.

The festivities began with the traditional Flores De Mayo celebration, a beautiful prusisyon (procession) where members offered flowers to the Blessed Virgin Mary, followed by a heartfelt mass.

Flores de Mayo, which translates to ‘Flowers of May,’ is a cherished tradition in the Philippines. It’s a month-long celebration honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary, where devotees offer flowers, prayers, and participate in processions (prusisyon) and masses.

The tradition symbolizes the Filipinos’ devotion, gratitude, and reverence for the Blessed Mother. The culmination of Flores de Mayo is often marked with a grand celebration, like the one held by the FCCG.

As the mass concluded, the community shifted gears to celebrate a very special milestone, that is, the birthday of Fr. Marcel. The festivities were filled with vibrant performances, including captivating dance numbers by Maylynn Den Boer and by Gold with her sister. Gold also treated the crowd to a soulful song performance.

The FCCG choir members stole the show with their harmonious rendition of ‘You’ve Got a Friend’ and a special Happy Birthday song, filling the atmosphere with love and camaraderie.

The celebration wouldn’t be complete without delicious foods. The venue was filled with an array of mouth-watering dishes, and as the celebration continued, the dance floor came alive with a fun-filled disco.

The double celebration was a demonstration of the strong bond and sense of community within FCCG. It was a day filled with faith, joy, and gratitude, honoring both the Blessed Virgin Mary and Fr. Marcel’s special day.
